Some Cool Polar Bear Facts

Polar bears happen to be the largest of all the worlds carnivores and an adult male can grow to weigh as much as six hundred kilo grams (around three hundred and twenty pounds).

The first recording of a polar bear being discovered was in the second century by an English explorer.

They live near or around the Arctic circle (not the South Pole as some seem to think, in fact, the furthest South one has ever been seen was James Bay, Canada). For the most part they live on the ice and the water.

Typically a polar bear will eat fish and seals. Interestingly they will sit on the ice by a seals air hole and wait patiently. Once the seal comes for air, they then are able to capture and eat it.

As with other bear species, it’s common for Polar Bears to eat pretty much anything they can get into. In fact, when they are forced to human dump sites to eat they have been harmed by ingesting used motor oil and car batteries.

Due to pollution and poor handling of habitat by humans, Polar Bears are facing a struggle to survive. Additionally, the degrading of the environment is forcing them to move further and further south which creates problems with stable ice, hunting and food sources as well as putting them more in the path of humans.
